Snails are terrestrial molluscs known for the shells they "carry on their backs". They have been part of human nutrition since the Palaeolithic era. In some parts of the world they are considered delicacies and Portugal is one of these. The snail is left to fast for a few days and then boiled slowly in water with spices and olive oil. The protein-rich snack is very popular during the summer.
Rich in protein and low in fat, snails are a food with a high nutritional value. Some argue that women should eat snails while breastfeeding, as they are very rich in calcium, which also makes them a good food for those suffering from rickets.
There are those who argue that snails "can and should be considered gourmet".
